In the world of sports, teams are always striving for an advantage over their competition. This can be in nutrition, speed and strength training, or in a mental capacity. Fortunately for Nouvel Catholic Central, they have an all-in-one competitive advantage in Athletic Trainer, Jesse Torres.
Torres grew up in Montrose, Michigan, going on to play soccer at SVSU. There, Torres would study to become an Athletic Trainer while working with a plethora of high school football and basketball programs. Torres also worked developing testing and workouts for the Flint Generals Hockey program, was an athletic training intern for the Detroit Tigers, and has worked with a number of men’s and women’s sports teams during his time at Delta College.
In 2021, the Ascension HealthCare employee joined the athletics program at Nouvel, bringing with him more than a decade of experience in the field. This experience has been an incredible asset to all of the sports teams at Nouvel and their student-athletes.
When he is not taping ankles, performing physical therapy with an injured athlete, or tending to any in-game ailments, Torres can be seen training a number of athletes, year-round, from different sports and off-seasons in Nouvel’s Performance Training Center.
“Our basketball team has really appreciated his help this year, working with the team for increased balance, explosiveness, and injury prevention,” shared varsity boys basketball assistant Sam Nacarato. “Not only is Jesse working to keep our student-athletes in the game by keeping them healthy, he works on mental toughness with them as well.”
Torres strives to help our Panther athletes in all of our sports offerings, assisting our male and female athletes. Additionally, he has a number of years of experience assisting with golf and tennis players at the collegiate level. “Jesse has been helpful with strengthening my core and working on flexibility to increase my swing speed,” Junior Alex McCarthy stated. McCarthy is a State Champion bowler and Regional Champion golfer. “He really made me feel comfortable training. I was not used to it, but he helped me learn the different techniques. I can already see an improvement. I feel like I am ready to compete at a championship level.”
